The Breathing Elephant in the Room
⚠️ Brachycephalic Health Warning
Both breeds suffer from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) to varying degrees. This means:
- • Difficulty breathing, especially in heat or during exercise
- • Snoring, snorting, and reverse sneezing (normal for them, not normal for dogs)
- • Heat intolerance — both breeds can overheat in minutes
- • Higher anesthesia risk for surgeries
- • Many airlines have banned flat-faced breeds from flying
If you choose either breed, find a breeder specifically selecting for longer muzzles and open nostrils. The health of these breeds depends on breeders prioritizing function over extreme flat-faced aesthetics.
Personality: The Clown vs The Cool Kid
Pugs are professional entertainers. They live for your attention, your laughter, and your lap. They're the class clowns of the dog world — goofy, dramatic, and willing to make fools of themselves for a reaction. A Pug will follow you from room to room, stare at you while you eat, and physically insert themselves into whatever you're doing.
French Bulldogs are more chill. They're affectionate but not desperate for attention. They'll hang out near you, enjoy a good cuddle, and then contentedly nap while you work. They have a quiet confidence that Pugs lack — they don't need to perform to feel loved.
The Cost Difference Is Staggering
French Bulldogs are among the most expensive dogs to buy AND own. Purchase prices of $3,000-5,000 are standard; rare colors (blue, lilac, merle) can hit $8,000-15,000. Most Frenchies are born via C-section (their heads are too large for natural birth), which drives breeding costs up.
Pugs are significantly more affordable — $1,000-2,500 from a reputable breeder. They can whelp naturally in most cases, and there are more breeders to choose from.
Ongoing vet costs are high for both breeds, but Frenchies tend to have more expensive health issues overall — spinal problems, BOAS surgery, and skin allergies add up fast.
