Cairn Terrier

Nobody warns you that a Cairn Terrier is fifteen pounds of dog who sincerely believes they're running the household — and honestly, they might be right. They're compact, scruffy, and absolutely fearless, which is a combination that leads to a very specific kind of chaos: the kind where your tiny terrier has cornered something under the deck, dug a hole to investigate a sound only they can hear, and then trotted back inside looking enormously pleased with themselves. Cairns don't do anything halfway. They love hard, play hard, and hold grudges about bath time with an intensity that borders on performance art. They were bred to dig vermin out of Scottish rock piles, and they carry that energy into modern life with zero adjustment — your backyard is just a rock pile that hasn't been properly excavated yet. But here's the thing nobody talks about enough: underneath all that terrier bravado is a dog who wants to be on your lap. Right now. They'll spend twenty minutes terrorizing a squirrel, then come inside and curl up against you like they haven't moved all day. A Cairn picks their person and that's it — you're chosen, you're theirs, and they will follow you from room to room with those dark eyes and that ridiculous scruffy face until you understand that you never really had a choice in the matter.
