Fila Brasileiro

There's a word in Portuguese — ojeriza — that roughly translates to an intense, instinctive aversion to strangers. It was literally bred into the Fila Brasileiro, and if you live with one, you've seen it: the way they position themselves between you and anyone who hasn't been formally introduced, the side-eye that says 'I don't know you and I have decided that's your problem.' But what outsiders never see — what only Fila people know — is the other side of that coin. The devotion. The absolute, marrow-deep, rearrange-my-entire-skeleton-to-be-closer-to-you devotion that makes this dog follow you from room to room like a 130-pound shadow who would genuinely rather die than let something happen to you. A Fila doesn't love casually. They love with the intensity of a dog whose ancestors tracked jaguars through Brazilian backcountry and guarded plantations through the night, and they have chosen you — specifically, irrevocably, completely you — as the thing worth guarding. They'll lean their massive head against your leg while you cook dinner, pressing harder when you try to move, and you'll realize this isn't neediness. It's a covenant. This dog has made you a promise they intend to keep with every fiber of their enormous, loyal, magnificently stubborn body.
