Bouvier des Flandres

Nobody is ever ready for a Bouvier des Flandres. You see pictures and think 'big shaggy dog, got it.' Then one walks into the room and you realize you've been underestimating everything. The beard alone has more gravitas than most people you've met. Under that massive, tousled coat is a dog built like a truck — barrel-chested, powerful, designed to herd cattle in the worst weather Flanders could throw at them — but who moves through your house with surprising gentleness, stepping around the baby and the cat like a very hairy bouncer who's also a diplomat. The Bouvier doesn't do devotion halfway. They attach to their family like Velcro wrapped in a wool blanket and then covered in more wool. They'll follow you from room to room, not because they're anxious, but because they've decided that wherever you are is where they should be, and frankly, who's going to argue with 100 pounds of bearded conviction? They're the dog that strangers cross the street to avoid and your kids use as a pillow. The contradiction is the whole point.
